At the top of a mast, participants prepare a descent that immediately catches the eye. Attached to long strings, four dancers rotate around the axis while the ties unfold. Their movement evokes the flight of birds. But to reduce the ceremony of the Voladores to this image would miss his intention.
In the form described by UNESCO, a fifth participant remains on the platform and plays the flute and the drum. The ceremony expresses a spiritual relationship to nature and the universe. It is practiced by several communities in Mexico and Central America, including the Totonacs of Veracruz, with variants.
The spectator sees a spectacular figure; the participants also transmit values and a memory. The question is no longer just how these dancers manage to descend. It becomes that of the meaning that their community entrusts to this journey between the top of the mast and the earth.
What we know
Ceremonies vary by community; no acrobatics recipe.
