Two suns in the same sky: the image immediately evokes science fiction. Yet, in September 2011, NASA announced a very real planet that revolves around two stars. Its name is Kepler-16b, and the system is about two hundred light-years away.
The Kepler telescope did not discover it by photographing a double sunset. He measured decreases in brightness as objects passed in front of the stars. The study of these transits has confirmed a planet surrounding the stellar pair.
This cold gas giant is not a copy of a movie desert. The views showing its two suns are illustrations: no traveler has contemplated this scene from the ground. The discovery concerns an actual orbit, not a directly observed landscape.
This result shows that a planet can find its place around a couple of stars. The idea was no longer just a possibility drawn in a scenario: variations of light, recorded at a distance, had just provided proof.
What we know
Cold gaseous planet; artistic representations, not photography of a habitable landscape.
