Some heated stones, water, steam: the device seems simple. In the Finnish sauna culture described by UNESCO, however, this experience is not limited to bathing. It is also due to a moment of calm and shared uses.
The lyly, linked to the steam produced on hot stones, occupies a central place. Facilities and habits differ: wood-burning or electric heating, private or public places. The transmission is done especially in families, but also through associations and other learning spaces.
This variety makes the heritage less easy to enclose in a single image. There is not a single cabin that would embody the entire tradition. What is transmitted are ways of inhabiting this moment. The ordinary becomes remarkable precisely because it accompanies lives, and not only great ceremonies.
