This small colored umbrella does not necessarily wait for a shower. In the frevo of Recife and Olinda, he accompanies the passistas, dancers whose gestures can mix jumps, flexions and feats of agility. The Brazilian heritage inventory describes an accessory transformed with the dance, often much smaller than an ordinary umbrella, held in the hand.
The exact origin of this sombrinha is the subject of several explanations: it is better to avoid choosing a legend as certainty. The link between the passo, the frevo dance, and the practices of the capoeirists is documented. The music also combines several influences, including European marches and dances, in an urban language unique to Pernambuco.
Carnival associations maintain this heritage by organizing rehearsals, apprenticeships and parades. Improvisation retains an essential place: dancers seek new movements rather than strictly identical reproduction. Behind the immediately recognizable silhouette of the umbrella is therefore a lively collective art, where each performer can add his way of taking the rhythm.
