On August 19 and 20, 2025, the Kiruna church changed its address dramatically. According to the LKAB report, it is transported in its entirety on a specially arranged route of about five kilometers. The building weighs more than six hundred tons.
This move is part of the urban transformation linked to mining activity, which affects the former center of Kiruna. Prepared for several years with the local authorities and the Church of Sweden, it allows to keep an important building for the community by relocating it elsewhere.
Do not imagine the whole city sliding in a single block on the road. The transformation involves several operations and extends over time. The church provides a striking image: the heritage is not always preserved by standing still. Sometimes preserving a place of memory requires him to leave the ground to which he seemed permanently attached.
What we know
Source: operator responsible for the movement. Entirely displaced church; no entire city transported in a single operation, no dam in this case.
