On the eastern flank of El Capitan in Yosemite, Horsetail Fall is a small seasonal waterfall. On some evenings in February, it takes on an intense orange hue. The images can evoke a lava flow; it is nevertheless water illuminated by the setting sun.

The waterfall must flow, the sky must be sufficiently clear and the light must arrive at the right angle. Even a slight haze or clouds can mitigate the phenomenon. It is not enough to come in February to be sure to see this color.

The name "Firefall" is also reminiscent of an old artificial Yosemite show, where embers were poured from Glacier Point. The two events should not be confused. At Horsetail Fall, no fire goes down the wall: a temporary light alignment simply transforms the appearance of a waterfall.
