The name Grenzgipfel literally means “border summit”. In the Mont Rose massif, it designates the highest point on the border between Switzerland and Italy. The political line does not remain in the valleys: it can cross the heights of a massif.
The Zermatt Tourist Office explains that the ridge leading to Dufour Point has several elevations, including Grenzgipfel and Dunant Point. The proximity of these peaks has sometimes led to confusion in maps and guides. Being close to the climax is not that climax.
Point Dufour remains the highest peak in Switzerland, while the Grenzgipfel fulfils this particular role on the border. Two classifications cross this way without overlapping. On a mountain map, a name can tell an altitude, a story of ascent or a boundary between states; sometimes, these are three different stories.
What we know
The highest point of the Switzerland-Italy border, distinct from the highest point in Switzerland; no formality of passage is described.
