A door can lead to a cellar. In Derinkuyu, she opens on a set of galleries and pieces descending deep into the basement. The inhabitants dug the relatively tender tuff to build an organized shelter, with much more than a simple space to wait for the end of a danger.
The presentation of the Turkish Ministry of Culture describes reserves, refectories, churches and spaces for animals. The latter occupied rather the levels close to the entrance, to avoid bringing them down too far. Ducts provided ventilation, while facilities provided water.
This arrangement meets very concrete needs: breathe, store supplies, circulate and share certain kitchens. It does not prove that an entire population lived permanently without seeing the sky. The surprise is the size of the shelter and its organization: under the visible landscape, another architecture had made the wait possible.
