A red heart, sometimes a small mirror: the object looks like a decoration. However, it belongs to the gingerbread crafts of northern Croatia. These pieces are not only defined by their recipe. Their shape and decoration matter just as much.
After being molded, cooked and dried, the dough receives colors and ornaments proper to the work of each craftsman. Images, worms or messages can be added. The heart is a frequent motif; some wedding creations bear the names of the spouses and the date of the ceremony.
The small mirror is not a mysterious ingredient. It is part of the decorative elements that transform a paste product into an object addressed to someone. The UNESCO source also describes the transition from once-male transmission to learning that is open to women and men. Under the guise of a traditional souvenir is a living profession, able to change with its practitioners.
