Traveling far west doesn’t always mean having to change the time of your watch. China uses a single official time reference, called Beijing time, eight hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time.
This administrative unit does not erase geography. The Sun does not rise simultaneously at all longitudes. An identical displayed hour can therefore correspond to very different times of the solar day depending on where we are.
Local usage still brings a nuance: Time and Date describes in Xinjiang the unofficial employment of an hour staggered by two hours compared to that of Beijing. A watch tells more than an astronomical movement. It also reflects a collective agreement and sometimes a local practice, which do not always merge.
What we know
Official time distinguished from local usages; the Detroit/Windsor example of the proposal is not repeated.
