The cup is small, but the service exceeds its content. In the Arabic coffee traditions described by UNESCO, the host offers the drink until a gesture indicates that the guest has finished. He can then shake his cup slightly: a discreet message in the middle of the conversation.
Attention to guests and the elderly is also one of the documented uses. Preparation, presentation and sharing accompany regular meetings, weddings or conciliation meetings. Around the drink circulate poems, memories and discussions. Hospitality manifests itself in a series of attentions that the youngest learn by observing.
The international registration, extended in 2024 to Jordan, also brings together Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. It describes shared traditions, with variations in environment and community. The cup is therefore not a universal code applicable to every home: it is a concrete example of politeness transmitted.
