In the village of Bulgari in southeastern Bulgaria, the Panagyr ritual honors Saints Constantine and Helena on June 3 and 4. A procession with their icons leaves the village to join a spring, accompanied by drum and bagpipes. The most striking moment comes in the evening.
Around the embers, the audience forms a circle, while the nestinari enter the space and tread the coals. This passage is the climax of the Nestinarstvo, a practice in which the community expresses its veneration of the saints and wishes for the well-being of the village.
The ritual and its religious dimension are documented; this does not constitute proof of immunity to burns or a demonstration of supernatural power. The strangeness of this festival lies in its collective organization and in the place given to a dangerous gesture, at the end of a day of procession and music.
