Bamboo tubes hang in a small frame. When shaken or hit, the angklung produces a sound. But an instrument usually only provides a note or chord. To advance a melody, several people must intervene at the right time with instruments tuned differently.
The craftsman cuts the tubes, then assembles them with rattan ties. UNESCO describes ceremonial uses in Indonesia. It also recalls an evolution: in 1938, the musician Daeng Soetigna introduced angklungs using a diatonic scale, alongside pentatonic traditions.
This story avoids presenting the instrument as an object that has always remained unchanged. His learning is transmitted and his possibilities are developed. The small frame that a person holds seems modest; it takes on another dimension when the answers circulate in the group. To hear the entire musical phrase, you have to give up playing it alone.
