On the Gemini III flight, John Young brought a corned beef sandwich that was not part of the planned food program. With Gus Grissom, he finds himself in a space where an ordinary lunch no longer quite obeys earthly rules.
Bread produces crumbs. On a table, they fall. In weightlessness, they can float and disperse in a cabin full of equipment. The familiar gesture suddenly becomes a small demonstration of the constraints of space flight.
The anecdote remained famous, but it was not a menu invented by NASA or a prepared nutritional experiment. It was a sandwich brought on its own. In this story, the surprise is not that a man has eaten in space: it is that bread has ceased to behave like bread on Earth.
What we know
The sandwich was taken out of the planned program. No material damage is claimed here.
