Magnapinna’s images show a squid whose arms and tentacles appear to bend at right angles. From these “elbows” descend very long clear filaments, equipped with tiny suction cups. The animal can remain above the bottom, with its appendages spread far from its body.
Its large fins ensure its movements. When disturbed, fine filaments can retract quickly. The researchers believe that they intervene in the capture of food, but do not yet know with certainty the diet of this squid.
Specimens were collected as early as the 19th century, while its scientific description did not occur until 1998. The copies available remain particularly damaged young people: adult videos are therefore particularly valuable. The spectacular look was revealed before we fully understood the life of the animal.
What we know
Suspected filament food function; diet not presented as known.
