In front of its construction of twigs, the large gardener has pebbles and other objects. Their position does not just form a cluster: the smaller ones are usually near the aisle from which a female looks, while the larger ones occupy more distant locations.
Seen from this precise point, this arrangement reduces apparent size differences. Researchers talk about forced perspective, an effect that is also known in some human staging. To examine the construction, they removed the decorations and placed them next to the courtyard. The males began to restore the gradient as soon as the first objects were replaced.
Experience does not turn this bird into an architect who knows our drawing rules. It reveals a reproducible organization, adapted to a look placed in a particular direction. A courtyard that seems messy when you cross it can thus produce a completely different impression when you observe it from the entrance planned for the parade.
