In the spring of 2000, inboxes saw the arrival of a message on the subject announcing Iloveyou. The attachment looks like a letter. When executed in the target environment, it launches a program that spreads and alters files.

The trap associates curiosity with how file names are displayed. What appears to be a document can be a script. The technical difference counts, but the attack gains strength especially when the message seems to come from a known person.

The worm uses the email address book to send new copies. Each affected computer can transmit the same appearance of trust to other contacts. The apparent correspondent did not necessarily choose to write the message.

Organizations cut or filter mail services, while specialists distribute signatures and cleaning instructions. Losses include interruptions and corrupted files. Global damage estimates should not be treated as a sum collected by an author.

The investigation goes back to the Philippines and Guzman’s Onel. In an interview made public in 2020, he acknowledges the creation of the program, initially associated with the recovery of Internet access passwords. The Philippine legal framework at the time did not lead to the expected conviction for the spread of the worm.

Iloveyou remains a story of misguided trust: attackers don’t need to invent every human connection. They can let an address book convey the illusion that the message has been personally recommended.
