An open mouth and large teeth give Anoplogaster cornuta a spectacular face. The MBARI sheet indicates a size of up to about eighteen centimeters. The close framing of a photograph can easily make you forget about this scale.
The fish has a marked lateral line, sensitive to the movements of the water around it. Scientists think that this perception plays an important role, while his vision would be poor. In the dark, therefore, spotting a movement does not depend solely on the eyes.
Despite its presence in the deep waters of several oceans, it is rarely encountered by the teams of the research center. His visual reputation far exceeds the frequency of his observations. The strangeness of this face describes neither a marine giant nor a threat to bathers, but a small predator adapted to an unlit environment.
