Did you know that teams using AI have overtaken reference growers in a greenhouse contest? Wageningen describes the experiment completed in two thousand twenty. For six months, five teams remotely pilot cherry tomato crops with their algorithms, in compartments. The decisions concern climate, lighting and irrigation in a greenhouse equipped with sensors. It is not a humanoid that grows a tomato instantly. Our scene keeps the plants rooted, the fruits attached and the pipes connected: it illustrates the cultivation control.
The ranking evaluates profit, resources used and AI strategy. Automatoes wins the competition, with six euros eighty-six net profit per square meter. The result covers this culture and this period: it does not promise the same profitability at each farm.
The point is to coordinate measurable adjustments for months and compare the results. Research links data and conditions. A ventilation animation explains a mechanism, not an invented yield; the contest does not allow to turn all agricultures into a case.
What we know
The 2019/2020 competition involved six months of growing Axiany tomatoes in 96 m² compartments. The Automatoes team’s profit of €6.86/m² applies to that experiment, not to all farms.
