Did you know that an artificial intelligence piloted the shape of a plasma in a Swiss tokamak? In two thousand twenty-two, EPFL and DeepMind describe their experience on TCV. This is not free electricity distributed: the researchers are working on the control of a research plasma. In a tokamak, magnetic coils are used to maintain and modify the configuration of the plasma. Our cut illustrates the principle, not the inside of TCV. The coils remain attached to the structure, and the plasma does not become a ball that escapes into the laboratory.
The system is first trained in a simulator and then tested on the installation. The publication describes the forms and positions obtained. This step connects learning and physical control, but does not prove commercial production or a positive energy balance. Research objectives must be kept separate.
The interest is to adjust commands in a complex device, with material constraints. This is a control advance, not a power plant ready to power a city. This illustration explains the form and confinement; the results come from the published experience and its scope.
What we know
The result published in 2022 concerns the shape and position of the plasma in TCV. It does not demonstrate a commercial power plant or a positive energy balance. The image is a generic educational model, not a photograph of the installation.
