Did you know that an artificial intelligence ranked ahead of ninety-nine decimal eight percent of active players in a strategy game? In two thousand nineteen, AlphaStar reaches the Grandmaster level in StarCraft two. Attention: this percentage is about ranking, not victories in each game. It is necessary to collect resources, build and move units while the opponent acts. The whole map is not known at all times. This illustration shows this logic on an original map, without using false capture of the game or pretending to replay a specific encounter.
The publication describes this result for all three races in the game and explains the system’s constraints. The impressive figure does not mean that the AI wins 99.8% of its games. Confusing ranking with win rate would misrepresent what the experiment demonstrates.
The interest is this combination of planning and quick decisions with partial information. But the result is dated and limited to the protocol being tested. You can’t turn it into a statement about all players, all versions of the game, or any human strategy.
What we know
99.8% is a relative ranking, not a win rate. The result is dated 2019 and depends on the published protocol.
