Did you know that a database offers the predicted structures of more than two hundred million proteins? In two thousand twenty-two, AlphaFold expands this resource. The important word is predicted: it is not about two hundred million structures measured in the laboratory. A protein is a chain that takes shape in space. This form helps to understand its interactions. Our animated ribbon illustrates folding, without representing an identified protein. Its segments remain connected in a chain; no magic molecule comes to heal a patient here.
Prediction can give researchers a track of work, with confidence levels and limitations. It does not replace experiences. We must distinguish between proposing a structure and establishing what happens in a cell, with its partners and its environment.
Change is access to a starting point for research. But a calculated form is not, in itself, a medicine or a cure. This illustration explains this transition from a string to a geometry, and the source documents the size of the resource.
What we know
Structures of more than 200 million proteins are predicted. They are not all measured experimentally and are not treatments on their own.
