In some mountains of the American West, bristlecone pines have survived for several millennia. The National Park Service features trees that have been around for about four thousand years. Their tormented appearance is not enough to tell what they went through.
These trees are not necessarily giants with lush foliage. Their longevity makes it necessary to dissociate two impressions that we gladly bring together: to be old and to be immense. A modest silhouette can go through a time that imposing buildings never reach.
The discovery changes the walk. In front of an organism still alive, four thousand years cease to be only a duration encountered in a book. The landscape contains a material continuity between a very distant past and the moment we stop. The pine does not need to look like a monument to have the temporal depth.
What we know
Age of individual trees, distinct from that of clonal colonies. No updated world record or unverified comparison with all pyramids.
